The Aegean Region is a region that has an important place in the country’s economy and where most of the electricity consumption in Turkey takes place. There are important electricity generation power plants such as Soma, Yatağan, Yeniköy and Kemerköy in the Aegean Region, which is connected to the interconnected system from two points. In the past, due to the continuous increase in electricity consumption in the Aegean Region, existing power plants and transmission lines were insufficient, and as a result, unscheduled power cuts were experienced due to overloads. Considering the fact that these interruptions caused very important production losses and quality deterioration in the industry and great damage to the facilities, it was decided to build a power plant in the region. The purpose of this decision is to provide uninterrupted, clean and safe energy to all companies operating in the Manisa Industrial Park. After the investment decision, the tender works were completed in 1999 and the construction contract was signed with Wartsila Nsd Finland Oy (Finland) in October 1999. The power plant with a diesel generator with a power capacity of 54.3 MW, which was provisionally accepted on August 27, 2001, started actual production as of August 31, 2001.

However, in the course of time, despite the power plant operating at full capacity, it was decided to increase the capacity of the power plant, considering the increasing energy demands of the factories in the region and the energy needs of the newly established factories. While making a new investment decision, Manisa Industrial Park also took advantage of being the first IP to start using natural gas in the Aegean Region. It has been decided to use natural gas in the power plant due to the advantages it will provide in terms of both environmental effects and electricity generation costs.

As part of the investment, together with the 33/154 kV transformer center that will connect the power plant to the national system (2×100 MVa), the installation works of 3 natural gas engines and an additional 4 natural gas engines with a power of 34.92 MW were completed, and the temporary acceptance of the power plant was made on November 11, 2005, and the facilities were put into commercial operation.

After the completion of the investment, there were a total of 7 generator sets, including 3 units of 16,638 MW (Wartsila 18V50DF) and 4 units of 8.73 MW (Wartsila 20V34SG). The main fuel of 18V50DF type generator groups is 99% natural gas and 1% diesel as pilot fuel, these generators can also operate with 6 number fuel oil. Generators of type 20V34SG operate with 100% natural gas. Since the DeSOx unit was no longer needed after switching to natural gas, this system was deactivated.

Waste exhaust gases formed after electricity generation in generator groups produce 13 bar saturated steam in waste heat boilers. The steam generation capacity of the power plant is 45.5 tons per hour. In addition, the energy of the body cooling water of the engines is transferred to the closed loop water and this heat is transferred to the companies with the help of heat exchangers. In this way, it reaches 75-80% efficiency values in total.

With the completion of this investment of 52.000.000 Euro;

  • Electricity Generation Capacity has increased from 54 MW to 85 MW.
  • Steam Production Capacity has increased from 21.5 tons/hour to 45.5 tons/hour.
  • Hot Water Production Capacityhas increased from 750 tons/hour to 1000 tons/hour.

It has been calculated that the energy demand of the region will increase above the average of Turkey by predicting that the increasing electrical energy demand to be created by the factories that started production in the 4th and 5th parts, which are the expansion areas of the region, and the capacity increases of the companies still operating in the other parts of the region will cause an increase in the energy demand.

For these reasons, in December 2009, a new investment was decided to increase the power of the existing power plant, which has a power of approximately 85 MW, which differs from the currently operating facilities in terms of technology. As a result of detailed technical and financial evaluations, a state-of-the-art system was preferred, which would both increase the flexibility of the existing power plant, meet the increasing demands for steam and hot water, and produce electricity, steam and hot water when necessary for the changing energy needs of the region.

With the completion and commissioning of this investment in June 2011;

  • Electricity Generation Capacity has increased from 85 MW to 140 MW.
  • Steam Capacity has increased from 45 tons/hour to 102 tons/hour (13/18 barg).
  • Hot Water Production Capacity from 1000 tons/hour to 1350 tons/hour.

Electricity, steam and hot water consumption of industrialists can be monitored instantly from the computers in the power plant control center. These remote monitoring systems are designed with the latest technological equipment. The electricity distribution system was also installed with underground cables, and losses and malfunctions were minimized. In addition, in order to improve the energy quality, the power plant is connected to the national system with a 154 kV 160 MVA transformer center. Depending on the growing speed of the park, plans to increase the capacity of the power plant are also being made.

Total capacity of MIP-MIP Power Plants with investments in 2014

  • Electricity Generation Capacity has increased from 140 MW to 162 MW.
  • Steam Capacity has increased from 102 tons/hour to 137 tons/hour (13/18 barg).
  • Hot Water Production Capacity has increased from 1350 tons/hour to 1500 tons/hour (90°C-70°C).

Electricity, steam and hot water consumption of subscribers can be monitored via computers.

With the fluidized bed coal boiler invested in in 2015, the steam capacity increased by 70 tons/h (22.5 bar, 220°C) and the total steam capacity reached 207 tons/hour (13/18/22.5 barg).

With the MOSBIO Energy biomass power plant investments in 2021, the total electricity generation capacity of MIP / MIP Energy / MOSBIO Power plants increased from 162 MW to 165 MW.
